Laura Murphy is a young Irish Mezzo Soprano currently based in Berlin.

 

In 2015 Laura relocated to Berlin in pursuit of furthering her studies at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler. She completed her Masters in Opera in February 2018 under Prof. Sebastian Noack. Laura also studied with Prof. Thomas Quastoff, Prof. Wolfram Rieger (Lied), Prof. Byron Knutson (Opera) and Prof. Peter Berne (Opera) and with répétiteurs Claar ter Horst and Maria Urbanovich. 

 

Laura is currently engaged as a member of the Alto Section in the Rundfunkchor Berlin. Recent engagements include singing in Peter Sellar's production of Bach's St John Passion under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle and was the Alto Soloist at the inaugural Edinbach Bach Festival in Edinburgh. She premièred Hassan Khan’s TAINTED during the Maerzmusik Festival in Berlin and performed the leading role of Woman in the première of Brian Irvine and John McIlduff’s CONVERSATIONS ACROSS TIME. Laura made her debut at Deutsche Oper Berlin, in the Tischlerei as part of the Neue Szenen III Project, Die Durchborung der Welt, singing the leading role of Ham in Malte Giesen’s TAKO TSUBO. She was a Young Artist during the Mozart Festival in Würzburg, performing in the Kaisersaal of the Residence and has performed at the Konzerthaus Berlin. Role performances include Ottone / AGRIPPINA in the Radialsystem Berlin, Arsamene / SERSE at the HfM Berlin, Olive / KOANGA at Wexford Festival Opera, Woman / LOVEGOLFLOVE with Northern Ireland Opera, Nicklausse / LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN at the HfM Berlin, Third Lady / THE MAGIC FLUTE with Nevill Holt Opera and again with Northern Ireland Opera and Ino / SEMELE and Nancy / ALBERT HERRING both with the Royal Irish Academy of Music Dublin. 

Laura graduated with a First Class Honours from the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin. Here, she completed both her Bachelor and her Masters in Music Performance. Laura studied with Mary Brennan (Voice), Suzanne Murphy (Opera), Ann Murray DBE (RIAM Fellow) and Kathleen Tynan (Lied). Répétiteurs included Brenda and Máiread Hurley, Aoife O' Sullivan, Marek Ruszczynski and Dearbhla Collins. In addition to her studies Laura was also a Young Artist with Northern Ireland Opera in their Opera Studio Programme 2012/13.

 

Laura has participated in Masterclasses with Christiane Karg, Graham Johnson, David Gowland, Ann Murray DBE, Robin Tritschler, Roy Laughlin, Mikael Eliasen, Ian Burnside, Thomas Hampson, Alison Browner, Kathryn Harris and many more.

Laura is a multiple prizewinner at the ESB Feis Ceoil. Some of her awards include the Mezzo Soprano Solo, the German Government Cup for a Bach Aria, the Lieder Competition and Bursary, the Nancy Calthorpe for French Song and the Plunket Greene for Interpretation. She was the winner of the Iréne Sandford Award and Bursary at the Royal Irish Academy of Music and the Gaiety Bursary. She was a finalist in the Northern Ireland Opera Festival of Voice and in the Bernadette Greevy Vocal Bursary at the National Concert Hall.
